I make my own cold process soap, switched to the no 'poo method (I added honey, it keeps my hair softer) and I make my own natural all-purpose cleaner simply by mixing grated handmade soap, baking soda and a few drops of essential oil.

What was missing was perfume. I tried solid perfume where you mix vegetable oil with beeswax and essential oils but wasn't quite happy with it. But I had a revelation when I was making natural vanilla extract for cooking and baking. It smelled so nice and I remembered how I used to love "Vanilla Fields" when I was 15. I decided to make my own.

To make it, you'll need:

400-500 ml cheap vodka 40% alc.

3 vanilla beans

grated skin of 2 lemons

essential oil(s) of your choice

2 glass bottles app. 200 ml

a perfume spray bottle

First you have to make vanilla and lemon extract. Grate the skin of a lemon (or use a potatoe peeler) and put it in bottle. Add approximately 200-250 ml of vodka. Make sure there's hardly any air left in the bottle to avoid evaporation. Cut the vanilla beans open lengthwise and put them in a bottle with vodka. Put both bottles in a dark cupboard for 4-6 weeks and shake them daily.

After 4-6 weeks, mix 2 parts vanilla and 1 part lemon extract in a perfume bottle of spray bottle. Add about 5 drops per 20 ml of essential oil of your choice. I used orange but I think cinnamon or clove would be a great addition too. Without preservatives it will probably not stay good as long as store bought eau de toilette (because of the essential oils in it) so don't make too much at once.

You can use the extracts for baking too. All natural real taste and it stays well for years. Just make sure the beans and peels are always completely covered with vodka to prevent molding.

Not a fan of vanilla? You can extract scents from different plants and flowers like lavender, roses and herbs like rosemary and lemon balm.

Two weeks ago she helped me make ceramic soap dishes together with my boyfriends mother. We had great fun and I never expected we'd be able to make so many! We were there for a long afternoon and made 22 in total. I was expecting not to be able to make more than 2-3... A week later the dishes were baked and ready to be glazed.

Here's some of the dishes I made:
He sold all of them within less than 2 months. So I made more. I started using palm oil again for this one because I couldn't get any coconut oil in my area and I only had a little left. I will have to go order it online again.
Additves: rhassul clay, cinnamon // Dead Sea mud, oat meal
Liquid: raw goat milk
Additives: titanium dioxide, white clay, Dead Dea mud
Scent: FO Chamomile
Method: cold process, put in the freezer for 3 hours

I got a partial gel and slight overheating in the middle. It's also a bit grainy because it traced almost as soon as I started mixing. Then adding the FO made it even worse. I don't really mind though, it makes the soap look robust and rustic.
It's hardly noticeble. I used 1 tbs per pound of oils, must remember to double that next time. The green color is slowly turning brown. I used green clay and spirulina? Does anybody know what is causing it?

This weekend I'm trying to sell them even though they're not cured yet. I put a huge sign on them saying " use after 31-07-2013". I'm having a small table on a fair on an ecological farm called "BuitenBant".
I planned for pink drops (cherries) and green leaves on top. It's pretty close to how I imagined it should be. Now I wish I made a larger batch...

Oils: coconut, olive, wheat germ, castor, shea butter
She once bought calendula soap for her niece who has sensitive skin which worked very well for her. I added raw sour goatmilk for extra benefits to the skin.
I didn't get to do a nice swirl because the lavender FO made it trace quite fast. I had to spoon it into the mold. I topped it with some light green mica in olive oil. I was hoping for bright green and pink spring colors but it's more of a salmon color again.

I dug up some more rhubarb root and promised myself this time I would let it sit in the olive oil for at least 2 weeks.

Oils: olive (4 days rhubarb root infused), coconut, hazelnut, castor, wheat germ and palmpit
Liquid: water
Additives: 2 spoons of yoghurt (which might have had some influance on the rhubarb extract?)
Color: light green mica and rhubarb root extract
Scent: lavender FO
She does amazing things with natural dyes for soap, fabrics and wool. Being a rhubarb fan, the one I liked the most is her pink rhubarb soap.

Now if you're impatient like me, you might rush through the text and then run outside to cut off some rhubarb

stalks and put them in oil to macerate. You'd be wrong though.

Luckily, after I did that, I went back to her post and read it plus the comments more carefully. It's not the stalks you'll need for that gorgeous pink but the root.

So I ran outside again and dug up some root and put them in olive oil. The roots are yellowish but the extract will make your soap turn pink when it comes in contact with the lye.

Usually I let my macerates sit on the windowsil for at least 6 weeks. Being an impatient but adult person I actually can wait that long (but it's hard). Not this time though. After 3 hours I decided I should give it a try with a small 150 grams batch of guest soaps.

They didn't turn out pink but they definately show some very light salmon pink. I did put a tiny piece of root in the garlic press and added the juice (just 3 drops) to the soap. I think they look very promising.
The bad thing about palm oil is that the expansion of palm plantations into high conservation value forests is recognized as a leading thread to critically endangered species including orangutans, elephants and tigers.

That's why I decided to stop using palm oil from now on. Of course there is sustainable palm oil available but it's so expensive I'd rather skip it altogether. Right now I am in a transition fase because I have some palm kernel oil left I need to finish first.

I made these rosemary & yoghurt bars on Friday. To compensate the lack of palm oil and hardness, I used 40% coconut oil and yoghurt. I know a lot of soapmakers say you shouldn't use more than 30% coconut oil because it's drying to the skin. But I love my 100% coconut oil bars so how bad could a percentage of 40-50 be? I might just use a slightly higher superfatting percentage next time.

Oils: coconut, olive (rosemary infused), sunflower, castor, wheat germ, palm pit
Liquid: yoghurt and water 50/50
Additives: 3/4 green alg powder, 1/4 ghassoul clay, a splash of yoghurt mixed with the oils, 1/2 ts honey
Scent: EO rosemary, anis and juniper

The hanger swirl failed, it's still just 2 layers.
A while ago I made soap with coconut milk in it not knowing it would make such a lovely bar. I didn't expect much from it. But it turned out coconut milk is a great soap ingredient. The soap felt lotionlike and very smooth and creamy. So I made another batch. The two square ones are for my personal use. They are scented with eucalyptus EO, a smell I love. The others are for presents and maybe I'll try and sell some too.
